Smart + Strong, the publisher of award-winning, community-focused health magazines and websites, announced today the promotion of Trent Straube to editor-in-chief of Cancer Health, which is published for people living with and affected by cancer.

In his new role, Straube oversees the Cancer Health print magazine and the CancerHealth.com website. In addition, he will continue serving as deputy editor for the POZ print magazine and the POZ.com website, which chronicle the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Former Cancer Health editor-in-chief Bob Barnett has retired. He will continue with Cancer Health as a contributing editor and writer.

“I’m looking forward to expanding my role at Smart + Strong to empower people to live and thrive with various health conditions, including cancer,” Straube said. “Like many families, mine has been profoundly affected by cancer, including leukemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and my own diagnosis of skin cancer. I’m especially excited to amplify the stories of cancer survivors and report on quality-of-life issues and new treatments in the pipeline.”

Straube is an editor and writer with over 20 years of experience. Before joining Smart + Strong in 2009, he was editor-in-chief of The New York Blade, an LGBTQ newspaper. He previously was editor-in-chief of HX Magazine, an LGBTQ nightlife publication. He has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

“Smart + Strong is pleased to have Trent Straube as our new editor-in-chief of Cancer Health,” said Oriol Gutierrez, editorial director of Smart + Strong. “We look forward to his stewardship of Cancer Health and his continuing contributions to POZ.”
